Merck & Co. Helps Bridgeway To Present Mental Health Training Series

(Elizabeth, NJ, February, 2008) — Bridgeway Rehabilitation Services, Inc. is expanding its training series with a new initiative to help staff, service recipients, and the larger communities connect cutting edge research to the effective and currently used practices in mental health. In partnering with Dr. John Fossella, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Bridgeway seeks to harness his expertise in human genome research and neuroimaging with his ongoing efforts to help translate basic research to the provision of services to people with psychiatric disabilities. With support from a Merck & Co. Community Advisory Panel Mini-Grant, this five part series presented at Bridgeway training locations in the greater Union County area during March and April will connect “hard science” to human services to assist in reducing the gap of research to practice. Topics that will be presented in WHEN HARD SCIENCE MEETS PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION include How the Brain Works, The Real Benefit of Reflective Responding, The Organic Benefits of Coping Skills, The Impact of Social Isolation on Our Minds, and The Effects of Employment on Neurocognition.

This series of trainings will provide a different lens for providers, service recipients, and other community members to evaluate the services provided, received, and expected by mental health practitioners. By educating our larger community, Bridgeway seeks to assist various stakeholders in examining the services provided from a neurological perspective and narrow the gap from clinical research to practice.

Bridgeway is a psychiatric rehabilitation service agency providing assistance for residents of Central New Jersey who experience psychiatric illnesses. Bridgeway programs provide skill development and support services to assist people in their journey towards mental health recovery, wellness, self-sufficiency and quality of life. The best practices model helps service recipients to create individualized recovery plans, with goals such as living independently, reduction of hospitalization rate, returning to work, and assuming other valued roles in the community. Bridgeway also provides technical assistance and training to other mental health providers.
